The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) says it has mobilised more than N100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants and implemented projects aimed at improving basic education across Nigeria.
Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, disclosed this during a media engagement with education correspondents in Abuja.
Garba said the commission, working with State Universal Basic Education Boards, has constructed more than 4,600 classrooms and renovated over 6,100 others nationwide. She added that thousands of toilets, boreholes and school furniture items have also been provided to improve learning conditions.
According to her, UBEC has supported the establishment of over 2,300 Early Childhood Care Development and Education Centres as part of efforts to strengthen foundational learning.
She further stated that more than N20.4 billion has been invested in teacher development programmes, while initiatives such as the Effective Schools Programme and strengthened School-Based Management Committees are being used to improve accountability and school administration.
Garba noted that the commission is expanding technology-driven learning through Digital Literacy Centres, Smart Schools and programmes focused on coding, robotics and artificial intelligence.
She added that over 7.8 million instructional materials have been distributed nationwide to improve literacy and numeracy among pupils.
The UBEC boss called on stakeholders, including the media, communities and development partners, to continue supporting efforts aimed at improving access to quality basic education.
