A partnership between the Embassy of France in Nigeria and 13 Nigerian universities has demonstrated the economic potential of recycling plastic waste, with projections showing the initiative could generate nearly ₦950 million annually.
The two-year project, valued at €753,000, focused on promoting a circular economy through recycling, innovation and green entrepreneurship within higher institutions.
According to an independent evaluation presented at the project’s closeout ceremony in Abuja, participating universities developed the capacity to recycle 3.17 metric tonnes of plastic waste daily.
The programme also diverted more than 145 metric tonnes of plastic waste from landfills and waterways, while converting over 79 metric tonnes into products such as eco-bricks, paving stones, construction materials, plastic flakes and 3D-printing filament.
More than 1,500 students received specialised training in recycling technologies and circular economy innovation, while 275 informal waste pickers were integrated into organised recycling value chains.
The evaluation projected that participating institutions could generate about ₦949.3 million annually if the facilities operate at full capacity.
French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, described recycling and waste management as opportunities capable of creating jobs, stimulating innovation and supporting local industries.
He reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening scientific and research collaboration with Nigerian universities beyond the lifespan of the project.
Participants at the event called for stronger institutional support, improved operational systems and sustained investment to ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
