The Federal Government has expressed willingness to provide land across the country to credible investors interested in developing large-scale housing projects aimed at reducing Nigeria’s housing deficit.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, made the disclosure during a meeting with a Chinese delegation seeking partnership with the government to deliver affordable housing nationwide.
According to a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Badamasi Haiba, the proposal aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme.
Darma said the government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for genuine investors through land allocation and institutional support.
“Our mandate is to ensure that more Nigerians have access to affordable and decent housing,” he said.
“We are ready and willing to provide land in Abuja, across the states and local government areas, subject to due process and statutory requirements.”
The Chinese delegation, led by Chief Engineer Lewis Chima, said Nigeria’s estimated housing deficit of about 17 million units presents an opportunity for large-scale intervention.
Chima explained that the company intends to deploy modern prefabricated construction technology under an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Financing model.
He said the proposed project targets the delivery of 10,000 housing units within 30 months.
“The objective is not merely to construct houses but to develop sustainable communities through modern industrialised construction technology,” he said.
According to him, the initiative would help reduce construction costs, improve quality, shorten project timelines and facilitate technology transfer.
Following the presentation, the minister directed the constitution of a committee to review the proposal and advise on the ministry’s next course of action.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to partnerships that support the delivery of affordable housing across the country.
The Federal Government says construction is already underway on more than 10,000 housing units in 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme.
