President Bola Tinubu on Thursday formally presented Vice President Kashim Shettima with the certificate confirming his nomination as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The presentation took place during a brief ceremony at the President’s office in the State House, Abuja.
A video released by the State House media office showed Shettima being ushered into the President’s office before receiving the nomination certificate, marking another step in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
The development comes days after the ruling party formally submitted the nomination forms of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The forms were presented to APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, on July 10 by the President’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Ibrahim Masari, acting on behalf of President Tinubu.
INEC had initially fixed July 11, 2026, as the deadline for political parties to submit nomination forms for presidential, vice-presidential, Senate and House of Representatives candidates in accordance with Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act 2026. However, following consultations with stakeholders, the electoral body extended the deadline to July 14.
The APC subsequently submitted the names of Tinubu and Shettima as its presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
Speaking after the submission, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, expressed confidence that the party would retain power in the next general election.
President Tinubu emerged as the APC presidential candidate at the party’s primary election held on May 23, 2026, polling 10,999,162 votes to defeat his only challenger, Stanley Osifo, who secured 16,503 votes.
The presentation of the nomination certificate to Shettima effectively confirms his place on the APC ticket as the party prepares for what is expected to be a highly contested presidential election.
Under the revised electoral timetable contained in the Electoral Act 2026, Nigeria’s next presidential election is scheduled to hold on January 16, 2027.
