The Department of State Services (DSS) says it will appeal the life sentences imposed on two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, arguing that the punishment does not adequately reflect the gravity of their offences.
A Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, and Abubakar Abba to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to 32 terrorism-related charges.
A senior DSS official disclosed that the Service would seek a stiffer penalty, maintaining that the sentences fell short of delivering justice for victims of terrorist attacks linked to the group.
The official revealed that the two commanders changed their plea and admitted guilt shortly after security forces rescued pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo State.
According to the DSS, the kidnappers had demanded the release of the Ansaru leaders in exchange for the abducted victims.
The Service also referenced the killing of two teachers during the abduction, insisting that the severity of the crimes warranted stronger punishment.
The DSS reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice and strengthening efforts against terrorism across the country.
