The United Kingdom Government has advised applicants for British passports to allow up to three weeks for processing under its standard passport service and cautioned travellers against booking trips before receiving their new passports.
According to guidance published on the official UK Government website, most applicants using the standard service will receive their passports within three weeks.
The government explained that the processing timeline begins only after HM Passport Office receives all supporting documents, not from the date an application is submitted.
“You’ll usually get your passport within 3 weeks. It may take longer than 3 weeks if we need more information, or we need to interview you. We’ll tell you this within 3 weeks,” the guidance stated.
The UK Government noted that some applications could take longer if additional information is required or if applicants are invited for interviews as part of the verification process.
The guidance applies to passport applications submitted within the United Kingdom, while processing times for applications made from outside the country may vary.
Applicants were encouraged to use the online application platform, which the government described as the most affordable option.
Those who prefer paper applications submitted through designated Post Offices will be required to pay an additional fee of £16.
“You can also apply with a paper form from a post office. This costs an extra £16.00,” the guidance added.
For individuals requiring urgent passport services, the government said expedited options remain available through the Online Premium Service and the one-week Fast Track Service.
The authorities also advised applicants facing emergencies, including serious illness, bereavement or urgent government-related travel, to contact the Passport Adviceline for assistance.
Applicants who have already submitted their applications can monitor progress through the official passport tracking service.
The UK Government further warned travellers against making travel arrangements before receiving their new passports, noting that replacement passports are issued with new passport numbers that could affect existing travel bookings.
The advisory forms part of ongoing efforts to help applicants plan adequately and avoid disruptions to their travel schedules.
