Todd Blanche, former personal lawyer to United States President Donald Trump, is expected to secure Senate confirmation as Attorney General following support from Republican lawmakers despite opposition from Democrats.
Blanche, who has been serving in an acting capacity as the country’s top law enforcement officer, represented Trump in several criminal cases before joining the administration.
His confirmation initially faced uncertainty after two Republican senators indicated they would not support his nomination. However, Senator Bill Cassidy later announced his backing, improving Blanche’s prospects of securing approval by a narrow margin.
Democrats have strongly opposed the nomination, arguing that Blanche’s close relationship with Trump raises concerns about the independence of the Department of Justice.
Senator Dick Durbin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, criticised the nominee, alleging that he continues to operate as the President’s personal lawyer rather than as an independent public official.
One of the major issues raised during the confirmation process was Blanche’s proposal for a $1.8 billion fund intended to compensate individuals whom Trump describes as victims of politically motivated prosecutions.
The proposal generated controversy because it was expected to include some individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol.
Another point of contention involved a proposal that would have granted immunity from certain tax audits to Trump and some of his business interests.
Blanche later addressed concerns by withdrawing the proposed fund and clarifying that the audit-related arrangement would apply only to previous tax years rather than future filings.
He has served as acting attorney general since April after Trump dismissed former Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Since assuming the role, Blanche has been associated with several decisions that critics describe as part of a broader effort by the administration to target political opponents.
He has also faced scrutiny over his handling of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whose case continues to attract public attention in the United States.
Before entering government, Blanche was a member of Trump’s legal team in several high-profile cases, including the New York hush-money trial involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels and federal investigations led by Special Counsel Jack Smith.
The federal cases concerning alleged mishandling of classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results were later dropped after Trump returned to office following the 2024 election.
If confirmed, Blanche will officially become the chief law enforcement officer of the United States and oversee the Department of Justice.
