Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged politicians seeking to succeed him in 2027 to concentrate on presenting their programmes and vision for the state rather than attacking his administration.
The governor made the remarks in Ibadan amid increasing political activities ahead of the next governorship election.
Makinde stated that he would not be a candidate in the election and therefore should not be the focus of campaign strategies adopted by aspiring governors.
He advised contestants to explain to voters how they intend to improve governance and address challenges facing the state instead of dwelling on perceived shortcomings of his administration.
The governor also appeared to respond to recent comments by Accord Party governorship candidate and broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, regarding his role in Makinde’s political rise.
According to Makinde, some political actors have become preoccupied with claiming credit for his emergence as governor rather than outlining practical solutions to issues affecting residents.
He maintained that his administration has done its best within the period of its mandate and encouraged aspirants to build on existing achievements while correcting any identified shortcomings.
Makinde further urged the electorate to critically assess all candidates seeking public office and demand clear policy alternatives from them.
The governor said voters should focus on what contenders plan to do differently and how they intend to improve the welfare of the people.
Political activities in Oyo State have intensified ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with several aspirants already positioning themselves for the race.
Among them is Oriyomi Hamzat, founder of Agidigbo FM, who declared his governorship ambition under the Accord Party and has continued to engage supporters across the state.
Observers say the exchange reflects the growing political realignments and competition expected to shape the contest for leadership in Oyo State after Makinde’s tenure ends in 2027.
