Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide explanations regarding reports that projects worth about $20 billion are allegedly linked to businessman Gilbert Chagoury, a long-time associate of the President.
Atiku, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the concerns raised by a recent report from The Economist had elevated questions about government procurement practices and public accountability.
According to him, projects of such significant value require transparency, especially at a time when Nigerians are facing economic challenges and increased living costs.
The former vice president questioned how contracts of such magnitude were awarded and whether due process, competitive bidding and transparency requirements were followed.
He also called for clarification on any tax waivers, concessions or privileges that may have been granted in connection with the projects, as well as details of their ownership structures.
Atiku argued that the issues raised go beyond politics and touch on public trust, accountability and the credibility of ongoing economic reforms.
He maintained that Nigerians deserve answers regarding the management of public resources and the relationship between political influence and access to major government contracts.
The ADC presidential candidate urged the Presidency to make public all relevant procurement records and financial details relating to the projects in question.
According to him, full disclosure would help address public concerns and reinforce confidence in government processes.
The Presidency has yet to officially respond to the latest remarks.
