Joshua Crash Trial Adjourned as Driver Faces Four Charges

The trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver accused of causing the crash that killed two members of Anthony Joshua’s team, has been adjourned until November 17 by a Magistrate Court in Ogun State.

Kayode, 46, is facing a four-count charge arising from the December 29, 2025 accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, in which former world heavyweight champion Joshua was injured. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to Sky Sports, proceedings scheduled for Thursday were adjourned as the court continued hearing the case. The charges include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

The accident occurred around the Makun area near Sagamu as Joshua and members of his team travelled to visit his father in Ogun State. His personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, died in the crash.

Prosecutors allege that Kayode was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team lost control and collided with a stationary truck.

Earlier findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that the SUV may have been travelling above the prescribed speed limit before the overtaking manoeuvre. The vehicle was suspected to have lost control during the attempt before crashing into the stationary truck.

Joshua survived the accident but sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He was later discharged after doctors determined that he was fit to continue his recovery at home.

Kayode was initially arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate’s Court on January 2 and granted bail of N5 million with two sureties. The case was subsequently adjourned for further proceedings.

Police had told the court during earlier proceedings that the vehicles involved in the crash had been removed from the scene before investigators arrived.

The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami drew widespread attention in Nigeria and abroad. Ghami had worked with Joshua as his strength and conditioning coach for more than a decade, while Ayodele was his personal trainer. Both were regarded as close friends and longstanding members of the boxer’s inner circle.

Kayode’s trial will now resume on November 17 as the court continues to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
