Martin Odegaard’s second-half strike earned Arsenal a valuable 1-0 victory over Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday as the Gunners opened their 2026/27 Champions League campaign with three points.
The Arsenal captain settled a tightly contested encounter in the 75th minute, finishing off a move involving Martin Zubimendi. After receiving the pass near the edge of the Napoli penalty area, Odegaard allowed the ball to run in front of him before unleashing a powerful left-footed effort that struck the left post on its way into the net.
The victory gives Arsenal an important early advantage in the league phase following their runners-up finish in the previous edition of the competition.
Mikel Arteta’s side had dominated much of the opening half and repeatedly tested the Napoli defence. Arsenal registered 13 shots before the interval, setting a new club record for the most attempts in the first half of an away Champions League fixture.
Bukayo Saka was involved in several of the visitors’ best moments. He initially produced an inventive overhead kick after displaying good skill, although the effort failed to seriously trouble the Napoli goalkeeper.
Saka was involved again when his cross found Eberechi Eze, who headed the ball back towards Mikel Merino. The Spanish midfielder, however, was unable to convert from close range.
Arsenal continued to press and came close shortly before the break when Odegaard released Saka into the Napoli penalty area. The England winger cut inside onto his left foot but sent his shot over the crossbar.
Napoli, managed by Massimiliano Allegri, largely relied on a deep defensive shape and counter-attacking opportunities. Matteo Politano and Kevin De Bruyne both attempted efforts during the first half, but neither seriously threatened Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
The pattern continued after the restart as Arsenal searched for the breakthrough, eventually finding it through Odegaard with 15 minutes remaining.
Napoli pushed for a response after falling behind but struggled to create a clear opening capable of forcing an equaliser.
Arsenal’s disciplined performance secured a clean sheet and a crucial away win, leaving the Gunners on three points and 12th in the early league-phase standings.
Napoli, meanwhile, begin their campaign without a point and sit 30th after the opening round of fixtures.
