LAWMA Moves to Clear Illegal Structures From Olusosun Dumpsite

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced steps to reclaim parts of the Olusosun Dumpsite occupied by illegal structures, warning that encroachment could disrupt waste management operations at the facility.

The exercise began on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, with the issuance of removal notices to owners and occupants of shanties and other structures identified within the dumpsite.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this on Tuesday, saying those affected had been directed to remove their structures and vacate the area within a stipulated period in line with the law.

Gbadegesin said the move was necessary to protect the integrity and accessibility of the facility, which plays an important role in the management of waste generated across Lagos State.

He warned that unauthorised occupation and other activities within the dumpsite could interfere with the authority’s operations and make it more difficult to manage waste safely and efficiently.

According to him, maintaining clear and accessible operational areas at the dumpsite is essential to ensuring that waste management activities are carried out in an orderly manner.

The LAWMA chief said the authority was committed to preserving the facility and preventing activities capable of compromising its functionality.

He added that the removal of the illegal structures formed part of broader efforts to maintain an organised environment and support sustainable waste management practices across the state.

The authority is therefore giving owners and occupants of the affected structures an opportunity to comply with the removal notices within the period stipulated by law.

The Olusosun Dumpsite remains a key waste management facility, and LAWMA said protecting it from encroachment was necessary to sustain its operations.

The latest action also reflects the authority’s efforts to address activities within waste management facilities that could affect access, safety and operational efficiency.

LAWMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining orderly waste disposal and management infrastructure while taking steps to ensure that designated facilities remain available for their intended purposes.
