Nigeria Mourns Olu Jacobs as Tinubu Pays Tribute to Nollywood Icon

President Bola Tinubu has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the death of veteran actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, describing him as a towering figure whose contributions helped shape Nigeria’s creative industry.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President paid glowing tribute to the late actor, who died at the age of 84, noting that his remarkable career spanned theatre, television and film both within and outside Nigeria.

Tinubu described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors whose talent, professionalism and dedication elevated the standards of the entertainment industry and inspired generations of performers.

“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts,” the President stated.

The late actor was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian cinema. Before becoming a household name in Nollywood, Jacobs trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and built a successful acting career in the United Kingdom, appearing in television productions and international films.

Upon his return to Nigeria, he became one of the most recognisable faces in the country’s entertainment industry, featuring in numerous stage productions, television dramas and blockbuster movies. His commanding screen presence, versatility and ability to bring characters to life earned him admiration across generations.

Beyond acting, Jacobs played a significant role in mentoring younger talents and contributing to the professionalisation of Nollywood during its formative years. Industry stakeholders have often credited him with helping to establish standards that contributed to the sector’s growth into one of the largest film industries in the world.

Tributes have continued to pour in from government officials, entertainers, cultural organisations and fans, many of whom have described him as a national treasure whose legacy will endure through his body of work.

Tinubu extended his condolences to the Jacobs family, particularly his wife and fellow veteran actress, Joke Silva, their children, colleagues and the wider entertainment community.

The President said the actor’s impact transcended the screen, adding that his commitment to excellence and storytelling would continue to inspire future generations of Nigerian creatives.

As tributes continue across the country, many Nigerians are reflecting on the enduring legacy of a man whose career helped define an era in African entertainment and whose contributions remain deeply woven into the story of Nollywood.
