South African Politician Commends Nigeria Over Conviction of Heroin Trafficker

A prominent South African politician has praised Nigerian authorities following the conviction and sentencing of a South African woman for trafficking heroin into the country, describing the judgment as evidence of Nigeria’s firm stance against international drug crimes.

ActionSA President and Johannesburg mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba, made the remarks after the sentencing of Ann Jessica Will, a South African national who was convicted for importing 5.75 kilogrammes of heroin into Nigeria.

Will was arrested on July 6, 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja during the inward clearance of a Qatar Airways flight arriving from Doha.

Following her guilty plea before the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice Obiora Egwuatu sentenced her to concurrent prison terms of 15 years for conspiracy and 25 years for unlawful importation of heroin.

Reacting to the development on social media platform X, Mashaba commended Nigerian authorities and suggested that the conviction demonstrated a level of accountability that he believes is often lacking in efforts to combat drug trafficking.

He argued that decisive action against narcotics offenders is necessary to discourage criminal networks and protect communities from the harmful consequences of illicit drug trade.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also welcomed the judgment. Chairman of the agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), stated that the conviction sends a strong message that Nigeria will not serve as a safe destination for international drug cartels.

Marwa noted that the agency remains committed to disrupting transnational drug trafficking networks and strengthening cooperation with international partners.

Reports also indicated that Will’s husband was later arrested in Johannesburg, South Africa, while allegedly attempting to traffic drugs to Hong Kong. Authorities are expected to continue investigations into possible links between the suspects and wider international drug trafficking operations.

The case highlights the growing cooperation among law enforcement agencies across different countries in tackling cross-border narcotics crimes and dismantling international trafficking networks.
