President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian filmmakers Damilola Osikoya of Switch Visual Production and Nora Awolowo of Rixel Studios after their film, Black Market, secured a Guinness World Record in Lagos.
The filmmakers achieved the record on Saturday for the largest attendance at a film screening, marking another international recognition of Nigeria’s growing creative industry.
Tinubu’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President described the achievement as a reflection of the creativity, ambition and entrepreneurial drive of Nigerian filmmakers and other professionals working across the creative sector.
He said the record demonstrated the potential of Nigeria’s creative economy to generate businesses, create employment and open new markets for local talent.
According to Tinubu, the country’s creative industries are increasingly taking Nigerian stories, culture and artistic expressions to audiences beyond Africa. He cited film, music, fashion and art as areas where Nigerian talent continues to gain international attention.
The President said the success of Black Market showed what Nigerian creativity could achieve when combined with enterprise and the ability to operate at scale.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young Nigerians to turn their talents into sustainable livelihoods and globally competitive businesses.
Tinubu commended Osikoya and Awolowo, as well as the wider team behind Black Market, for their efforts in securing the record.
He urged them to build on the achievement and expressed his wishes for greater success as they continue their work in Nigeria’s creative industry.
The recognition comes as Nigeria’s film industry continues to serve as a major platform for showcasing the country’s culture and stories to international audiences. The latest record further highlights the ability of local filmmakers to attract large audiences while creating commercially viable creative projects.
