Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal has moved to the forefront of the 2026 Ballon d’Or race, overtaking Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane in The Independent’s latest power rankings ahead of the October 25 award ceremony in London.
The 19-year-old Spanish international has strengthened his candidacy through a combination of domestic success, impressive individual statistics and his reported contribution to Spain’s World Cup triumph.
Yamal, who finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting, is now being tipped to claim the prestigious individual honour for the first time.
According to the rankings, the Barcelona forward registered 24 goals and 18 assists during the previous campaign, helping his club secure the LaLiga title.
He has continued that momentum into the new season, scoring eight times in his opening eight appearances.
His international performances, including a goal against England in a 3-2 Nations League victory at Wembley, have further enhanced his standing.
Kane occupies second position despite producing remarkable numbers for Bayern Munich.
The England captain reportedly scored 61 goals in 51 appearances during the 2025/26 season, inspiring Bayern to a domestic league and cup double.
He also contributed six goals during England’s World Cup campaign, which ended with the country’s best tournament finish since 1966.
Kane acknowledged that his chances now depend on the voters, describing the previous season as the finest of his career.
Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe ranks third following another prolific campaign for club and country.
The French forward reportedly scored 42 goals in 44 club appearances and finished the World Cup with 10 goals.
Despite Real Madrid ending the season without silverware, Mbappe’s individual performances have kept him firmly in contention.
Spain midfielder Rodri takes fourth place after being credited with an influential role in his country’s World Cup victory.
Named the tournament’s best player, Rodri impressed with his midfield control, although injury concerns and limited early-season appearances for Barcelona have reportedly affected his ranking.
Completing the top five is eight-time winner Lionel Messi, whose performances helped Argentina reach the World Cup final.
The 39-year-old reportedly scored eight goals during the tournament before Argentina suffered defeat to Spain.
Messi’s contribution to Inter Miami’s Campeones Cup success has also strengthened his candidacy, with former England captain David Beckham publicly supporting another Ballon d’Or triumph for the Argentine.
Elsewhere, defending winner Ousmane Dembele occupies sixth position, while Manchester City’s Erling Haaland sits eighth.
Although the rankings place Yamal ahead of his rivals, the final decision rests with Ballon d’Or voters.
The October ceremony will determine whether the Barcelona youngster secures his maiden award or one of his more experienced challengers claims the honour.
