Real Madrid strengthened their position in the Spanish La Liga title race on Sunday after Kylian Mbappé struck a late winner to secure a dramatic 2–1 victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
The French international scored twice, including an 88th-minute winner, to settle a fiercely contested El Clásico that saw Barcelona recover from a first-half deficit before surrendering the points in the closing stages.
With the match heading towards a draw, Mbappé converted from close range after receiving a pass from Eduardo Camavinga, restoring Madrid’s advantage and silencing the home supporters.
The decisive goal came after Barcelona had enjoyed a period of attacking pressure, with the hosts pushing forward in search of a winner following Raphinha’s second-half equaliser.
Barcelona attempted another comeback during five minutes of stoppage time, but Madrid’s defence remained organised to preserve the narrow lead.
Mbappé received a yellow card during the closing moments as tensions increased between the two Spanish rivals.
Earlier, the visitors had taken the lead in the 41st minute when Mbappé capitalised on a loose ball inside Barcelona’s penalty area.
The France captain reacted quickly to the opportunity and fired beyond goalkeeper Joan García, giving Madrid a valuable advantage shortly before the interval.
Barcelona responded with greater attacking urgency after the restart, moving the ball forward and creating opportunities around the Madrid penalty area.
Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Raphinha collected a short pass from Pedri inside the box.
The Brazilian winger moved past his marker before driving a powerful effort into the left side of the net to restore parity.
The equaliser shifted momentum towards the home side, who subsequently increased the pressure on Madrid’s defence.
Lamine Yamal and Gerard Martín were involved in Barcelona’s attacking efforts as the hosts searched for a second goal.
However, Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and his defensive teammates resisted the pressure, preventing Barcelona from turning their improved performance into a lead.
Despite facing sustained attacks, Madrid remained dangerous whenever opportunities emerged in the opposition half.
Their persistence was rewarded two minutes before the end of regulation time when Camavinga supplied Mbappé for the decisive finish.
The goal completed the striker’s brace and ensured Madrid emerged victorious from another closely fought meeting between the Spanish giants.
For Barcelona, the defeat represented a frustrating outcome after recovering from the opening goal and creating chances to take control of the contest.
Madrid, meanwhile, will draw encouragement from their ability to withstand pressure and capitalise on decisive opportunities.
The result provides an important boost to their league campaign, with Mbappé’s finishing ultimately separating the teams in a contest marked by attacking intensity and late drama.
