Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position in the organisation’s 70-year history.
The appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigerian representation in continental football administration, placing Adamu in one of the most senior executive positions within Africa’s football governing body.
His confirmation was announced on Thursday, drawing congratulations from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which described the development as a major achievement for the country’s football administration.
Reacting to the announcement, the NFF’s acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to discharge his responsibilities effectively.
“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation, and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” Ikpeme said.
He added that the federation would support the newly confirmed general secretary in his responsibilities at the continental football organisation.
“The NFF is delighted with this appointment, and we will give him all the necessary support as a member association under CAF. We wish him tremendous success in the job,” he stated.
Adamu’s confirmation follows his appointment as acting general secretary on March 29, after the resignation of his predecessor, Swiss-Congolese football administrator Veron Mosengo-Omba.
He had occupied the position in an acting capacity before receiving confirmation as the substantive holder of the office.
Before assuming his latest responsibilities, Adamu had built considerable experience within CAF’s administrative structure.
He initially joined the organisation, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, as Director of Competitions, overseeing aspects of the continent’s football competition administration.
He subsequently became Director of Tournaments and Events, a position that further expanded his involvement in the planning and management of major football competitions.
His progression through these departments provided him with experience in the operational demands of African football governance.
Adamu also possesses an academic background in sports administration, having obtained a FIFA Master’s degree in the management, law and humanities of sport.
His involvement in football administration dates back to the early 2010s, when he established Copa Lagos, a beach soccer tournament that attracted attention to the sport in Nigeria.
Although the competition is now defunct, it represented an early stage in his career before his emergence within CAF’s leadership structure.
As general secretary, Adamu will occupy a central administrative position in the organisation responsible for overseeing football development and competitions across Africa.
His appointment also represents a notable moment for Nigeria, whose football administrators have contributed to continental football activities over the years.
The NFF maintained that it was optimistic about his tenure and looked forward to supporting him in his new role.
