The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi State Council, has commended the Federal Government for approving a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers over six months, from November 2026 to April 2027, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising transportation costs and economic hardship.
However, the labour body says workers in Ebonyi State should not be left out of the relief. It has urged Governor Francis Nwifuru to consider a similar transport support package for state workers to ease their financial burden and improve productivity.
In this report, Professor Ogugua Egwu, Chairman of the NLC in Ebonyi State, welcomes the Federal Government’s intervention, highlights key provisions of the agreement with organised labour and stresses that effective implementation will be crucial.
The agreement also provided for the establishment of a committee to renegotiate the national minimum wage and the payment of outstanding arrears owed to health workers in three instalments, beginning in November.
With workers still grappling with the rising cost of living, the question now is: Will Governor Nwifuru follow the Federal Government’s example and approve similar relief for Ebonyi workers?.
