A building collapse in Aboru, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, has claimed one life and left two people injured after a two-storey structure undergoing manual demolition suddenly gave way.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at No. 42 Governors Road, Aboru, trapping workers beneath the debris.
Two adult males were rescued alive from the rubble following the collapse, while one person was recovered dead from beneath the debris.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said its Alpha Eagle Response Team was deployed from the Cappa, Oshodi Response Unit after receiving a distress call about the incident.
Rescue personnel worked at the scene to search through the collapsed structure and locate those trapped underneath. The two survivors received first aid from personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transported to a nearby health facility for further medical attention.
Following the incident, the affected area was cordoned off to safeguard residents and provide emergency responders with unhindered access to the site.
The latest collapse has again raised concerns over safety compliance during building construction and demolition activities in Lagos, particularly where structures are being manually dismantled.
Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, urged developers, property owners and members of the public to comply strictly with building regulations and ensure that demolition and construction work is handled by certified professionals.
He also called on residents to report suspicious or potentially dangerous building activities to the appropriate authorities through the state’s emergency lines, 767 and 112.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to strengthening emergency response capabilities through improved equipment, personnel training and the decentralisation of response units.
According to the government, these measures are part of efforts to improve the speed of emergency interventions across Lagos, with a target of achieving a 10-minute response time.
Meanwhile, emergency authorities are expected to continue assessing the scene and circumstances surrounding the collapse as concerns over compliance with safety procedures remain.
