Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has called on Nigerian youths to move beyond discussions on social media and become more actively involved in political and institutional development.
Adebayo made the call while speaking with members of the Young Progressive Professionals in Abuja, where he argued that meaningful political participation requires sustained engagement with communities and involvement in the institutions through which political leadership is developed.
The SDP candidate said young Nigerians should not limit their participation in public affairs to online commentary, political meetings or expressions of dissatisfaction with government policies. He encouraged them to become involved in community activities and political structures that can provide opportunities to influence decision-making.
According to Adebayo, political parties should serve not only as vehicles for elections but also as platforms through which aspiring leaders can gain experience and develop the skills required for public service.
He identified poverty and insecurity among the major challenges confronting Nigeria and argued that addressing them requires institutions capable of enforcing accountability and delivering effective governance.
The presidential candidate also cautioned against political mobilisation based on ethnic, religious or regional divisions. He urged young Nigerians to support political engagement centred on national development and the strengthening of institutions.
Adebayo’s comments come as political activities gradually increase ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political parties and aspirants seeking to engage different groups of voters, including the country’s large youth population.
Nigeria has a significant youth demographic, making young people an important constituency in political participation and public discourse. Beyond voting, questions around youth representation, political party membership, civic engagement and access to leadership positions have remained part of national discussions.
At the meeting, SDP National Chairman, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Gombe, also emphasised the importance of competent leadership, while the party’s running mate, Prof. Usman Bugaje, highlighted the need for capable individuals to participate actively in the country’s political process.
The speakers encouraged young professionals to develop their capacity and contribute to public institutions rather than remain detached from political activities.
Adebayo’s appeal comes amid broader concerns about the relationship between Nigeria’s younger population and formal political structures. While young Nigerians are highly visible in political discussions on digital platforms, participation in political parties and formal decision-making processes remains a subject of continuing debate.
The SDP candidate said sustained engagement at the grassroots level was necessary for citizens who want to influence how government operates and how public policies are developed.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, discussions around youth participation are expected to remain prominent, particularly regarding how younger Nigerians can translate their interest in national affairs into sustained civic and political engagement.
