AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: What Nigeria and the Rest of Africa Need to Know

The road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is officially underway, and for Nigerian football fans, there is already a reason to pay close attention.

Nigeria are in Group L with Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and hosts Tanzania. While the Super Eagles would normally be looking to finish among the top two, this qualification campaign comes with a twist: Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the tournament.

That means Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau are effectively fighting for one ticket.

Across Africa, 48 countries have entered the qualifying campaign, but only 21 will join hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda at AFCON 2027.

Here is how the qualification process works.

48 COUNTRIES ARE COMPETING FOR 21 PLACES

The 48 teams have been divided into 12 groups of four.

Each country will play six matches, facing the other three teams in its group home and away.

At the end of the campaign, 21 teams will qualify alongside the three hosts to complete the 24-team AFCON lineup.

UGANDA, KENYA AND TANZANIA ARE ALREADY QUALIFIED

The three East African hosts have automatic places at AFCON 2027.

However, they will still participate in the qualifying campaign. This creates a unique situation because their groups will not produce the usual two qualifiers.

NINE GROUPS WILL PRODUCE TWO QUALIFIERS

In the nine groups without a host nation, the top two teams will qualify.

These are:

·        Group A: Two qualifiers

·        Group B: Two qualifiers

·        Group C: Two qualifiers

·        Group E: Two qualifiers

·        Group F: Two qualifiers

·        Group G: Two qualifiers

·        Group I: Two qualifiers

·        Group J: Two qualifiers

·        Group K: Two qualifiers

Together, those groups will produce 18 qualifiers.

THE THREE HOST GROUPS WILL PRODUCE ONE QUALIFIER EACH

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have been placed in three different groups:

Group D: South Africa, Guinea, Kenya, Eritrea

Group H: Tunisia, Uganda, Libya, Botswana

Group L: Nigeria, Madagascar, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau

Because the three hosts already have guaranteed places, only one of the remaining teams in each group can qualify.

That means Group D, Group H and Group L will each provide one additional qualifier.

NIGERIA’S GROUP L IS WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING

For Nigerian fans, Group L will be one to watch closely.

Nigeria have been drawn alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau. Tanzania’s status as a host means the Super Eagles are not competing with them for the group’s qualification ticket.

Instead, Nigeria must finish ahead of Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau to secure the lone qualifying place.

In other words, there is very little room for Nigeria to take their foot off the pedal. Every point could become important across the six matches.

THE OTHER HOST GROUPS FACE THE SAME SITUATION

The three hosts cannot lose their places at AFCON 2027.

South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea are therefore battling for one qualification place alongside Kenya in Group D.

In Group H, Tunisia, Libya and Botswana are competing for the sole available spot alongside Uganda.

In Group L, Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau face the same challenge alongside Tanzania.

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER NINE GROUPS?

The remaining groups are more straightforward.

The top two teams after six matches will qualify for AFCON 2027.

That means teams in those groups will have to accumulate enough points to finish inside the top two.

FULL LIST OF QUALIFYING GROUPS

Group A: Morocco, Gabon, Niger, Lesotho

Group B: Egypt, Angola, Malawi, South Sudan

Group C: Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, The Gambia, Somalia

Group D: South Africa, Guinea, Kenya, Eritrea

Group E: DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe

Group F: Burkina Faso, Benin, Mauritania, Central African Republic

Group G: Cameroon, Comoros, Namibia, Congo

Group H: Tunisia, Uganda, Libya, Botswana

Group I: Algeria, Zambia, Togo, Burundi

Group J: Senegal, Mozambique, Sudan, Ethiopia

Group K: Mali, Cape Verde, Rwanda, Liberia

Group L: Nigeria, Madagascar, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau

WHEN WILL THE QUALIFIERS BE PLAYED?

The qualifying campaign is spread across three international windows.

The first two matchdays are scheduled for September and October 2026, followed by another round of fixtures in November.

The final two matchdays will be played in March 2027.

By the end of Matchday 6, all 21 available qualification places will have been decided.

WHEN IS AFCON 2027?

AFCON 2027 will be staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

The tournament will feature 24 teams: the three automatic qualifiers and the 21 countries that emerge from the qualifying campaign.

For Nigeria, the journey starts with a particularly interesting Group L. With only one qualification place available to the three non-host teams, the Super Eagles will have to treat every match as an important step towards East Africa.
