The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated that the success of military operations depends largely on the availability and serviceability of operational platforms, particularly mobility assets, while calling for stronger collaboration between security agencies and local communities in tackling security challenges.
The Army Chief made the remarks during the commissioning of refurbished operational vehicles and the inauguration of the Nightingale Club at the 1 Women Battalion, Giri, Abuja.
Represented by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Shaibu said operational vehicles remain critical to the effectiveness of military formations, enabling the rapid movement of personnel, equipment and logistics required for the successful execution of security operations across the country.
He stressed that maintaining operational readiness requires not only acquiring assets but also ensuring that they remain functional and available whenever needed.
According to him, the refurbishment of the vehicles reflects the Nigerian Army’s commitment to enhancing mobility, improving responsiveness and strengthening its capacity to address emerging security threats.
The Army Chief directed commanders and personnel to ensure proper maintenance and responsible handling of the vehicles, describing them as valuable national assets that must be protected and used strictly for authorised purposes.
He also highlighted the significance of the newly inaugurated Nightingale Club, describing it as an investment in troop welfare and morale. Shaibu noted that military effectiveness depends not only on equipment and operational capabilities but also on the well-being of personnel.
According to him, recreational and social facilities contribute to stronger unit cohesion, improved morale and enhanced esprit de corps among officers and soldiers.
In a related engagement in Offa, Kwara State, the Army Chief appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to strengthen cooperation with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence that could assist in preventing criminal activities.
Represented by Major-General Adewale Adekeye, Shaibu urged residents, particularly those in Kwara South, to promptly report suspicious activities and security concerns to relevant authorities.
He also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and fake news, warning that unverified information can fuel fear, create unnecessary tension and undermine ongoing security efforts.
The Army Chief emphasised that effective security management requires active participation from communities, traditional institutions and other stakeholders, noting that intelligence supplied by residents often plays a critical role in preventing attacks and aiding law enforcement operations.
He called for sustained civil-military cooperation, describing it as a vital component of efforts to address insecurity and maintain peace across the country.
Shaibu further assured Nigerians of the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging citizens to remain vigilant and support security agencies through lawful and constructive engagement.
