Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is projected to pick his running mate for the 2027 presidential election from one of three ex-governors
The three prominent politicians have emerged as leading contenders for the vice-presidential slot.
They are former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Imo State governor Emeka Ihedioha, and former Cross River State governor Donald Duke.
Sources familiar with the matter told the publication that consultations over the choice of a running mate have reached an advanced stage, with the three politicians currently receiving the most attention from party leaders.
Amaechi remains a notable figure within the ADC after participating in the party’s presidential primary.
The former Minister of Transportation finished second behind Atiku in the contest.
However, he later rejected the outcome of the primary election, alleging irregularities and claiming that many voters were unable to participate in the process.
Ihedioha is also being considered because of his long political career.
Apart from serving as governor of Imo State, he was Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and spent several years in the National Assembly.
Duke, who governed Cross River State between 1999 and 2007, is another name being discussed.
While some political observers believe he could attract support from different political groups, others have questioned how much influence he still commands after spending many years outside active elective office.
There are also suggestions that a merger between the ADC and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) could strengthen his chances of emerging as the vice-presidential candidate.
Sources said party leaders are examining several issues before making a final decision.
These include the political strength of each aspirant, regional considerations, electoral value, and their ability to appeal to voters across different parts of the country.
Atiku, who served as vice president between 1999 and 2007 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has contested for Nigeria’s presidency multiple times under different political platforms but has not succeeded.
Although he previously stated after the 2023 election that he would no longer seek the presidency, he later returned to the race and described the 2027 contest as his final attempt to occupy the nation’s highest office.
The ADC is expected to conclude consultations in the coming months as preparations for the 2027 general election continue.
