Benue Community Mourns as Gunmen Kill 15 in Deadly Dawn Attack

Tragedy struck a farming community in Benue State after gunmen suspected to be armed herders launched an early morning attack on residents of Mbajir Ward in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, leaving at least 15 people dead and several others injured.

The attack, which occurred in the Saai community, has reignited concerns over persistent violence affecting rural communities in parts of the state.

Residents said the assailants invaded the area in the early hours of the day, opening fire on villagers and causing widespread panic as families fled for safety.

Reacting to the incident, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, condemned the killings and described the attack as a senseless act of violence against innocent citizens.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to affected families.

Alia directed security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

He described the incident as particularly painful because it occurred at a time when many farmers had returned to their communities to resume agricultural activities.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property while working with security agencies to restore peace in troubled areas.

Also reacting, the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state, Chief Michael Aondoakaa (SAN), condemned the killings and called for urgent action to halt the cycle of violence.

He expressed concern over the growing number of attacks that have displaced thousands of residents and claimed numerous lives across the state.

Aondoakaa also referenced the recent killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Ardo Risku Muhammad, describing all acts of violence as unacceptable.

The latest attack adds to ongoing security concerns in Benue, a state that has repeatedly experienced clashes linked to land disputes, criminal activities and farmer-herder conflicts.

Residents are now calling for stronger security presence and lasting solutions to prevent further bloodshed.
