The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has underscored the critical role of the media in countering terrorist ideology and supporting Nigeria’s efforts to address the growing challenges of asymmetric warfare.
The Minister made the remarks while receiving members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence in Abuja.
Speaking on the importance of collaboration between the military and the media, General Musa said accurate and responsible reporting remains essential in ensuring that Nigerians receive credible information on defence and security matters.
According to him, terrorism is driven not only by violence but also by ideology, making information and public enlightenment important tools in the fight against extremism.
“Terrorism begins with a radical ideology, and such an ideology cannot be defeated with military hardware alone; it must also be countered with information. The objective is to change mindsets,” he said.
The Defence Minister noted that some citizens unknowingly amplify terrorist propaganda through social media, stressing that the media has a responsibility to educate the public and promote narratives that support national security efforts.
“That is why some citizens, often unknowingly, amplify terrorist propaganda on social media. To educate the public and discourage such actions, the media plays a crucial role in disseminating the right narrative and promoting greater public awareness,” he added.
General Musa further emphasised that the military requires strong media support in the current security environment and pledged to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with defence correspondents.
“The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will continue to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with the media and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public,” he said.
He also assured the association that the Ministry would carefully consider its proposals and implement those considered feasible.
The Minister urged defence correspondents to remain fair, balanced and professional in their reportage, noting that responsible journalism is vital to building public trust and strengthening national security.
Earlier, DECAN President, Mr Odita Sunday, congratulated General Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as a recognition of his professionalism, competence and distinguished service to the nation.
He announced that the association had resolved to confer on the Minister the title of Grand Patron of DECAN during its Conference and Award Ceremony scheduled for October 2026.
Odita also reaffirmed the association’s commitment to balanced, factual and responsible reporting of defence and security issues while commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their sacrifices in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
He called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents through regular media engagements and timely dissemination of defence-related information.
According to him, improved cooperation would enhance public confidence in the Armed Forces, promote patriotism and ensure Nigerians have access to accurate and timely information on defence matters.
