Dubai has entered a 10-day period of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a prominent member of the ruling family and younger brother of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The announcement was made by authorities on Monday, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast across the emirate as tributes poured in for the late royal figure, who played significant roles in public service, sports and the development of horse racing in the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh Ahmed, who died at the age of 76, was widely recognised for his contributions to Dubai’s security architecture through his service as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security. Over the years, he also became one of the most influential figures in international equestrian sports, helping to elevate Dubai’s profile on the global horse racing stage.
In a tribute, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum described his brother as a cherished member of the family whose memory would remain in their hearts and prayers. The tribute reflected the deep personal loss experienced by the ruling family and highlighted Sheikh Ahmed’s enduring legacy within the emirate.
Beyond public service, Sheikh Ahmed was renowned in global racing circles. Through his ownership of several successful racehorses and his association with the Jebel Ali Racecourse, he contributed significantly to the growth of horse racing in the UAE and internationally. His involvement helped position Dubai as a major destination for equestrian events and investments in the sport.
The Dubai Racing Club also paid tribute to the late royal, acknowledging his decades of commitment to the advancement of horse racing and sports development. The organisation described him as a respected figure whose contributions left a lasting impact on the industry.
The declaration of a 10-day mourning period underscores Sheikh Ahmed’s importance within Dubai’s leadership structure and broader society. During the mourning period, official activities are expected to be conducted in a subdued manner as residents, government institutions and members of the international community pay their respects.
His passing marks the end of an era for a member of one of the UAE’s most influential families, whose work in security, governance and sports helped shape aspects of modern Dubai’s development and global reputation.
