The Ebonyi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged assault of a civilian by police officers attached to the Ohaukwu Police Division.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, attracted public attention after images of the victim circulated on social media.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the officers involved have been identified and taken into custody pending the outcome of investigations.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor, ordered the immediate transfer of the officers from Ohaukwu Division to the Command Headquarters following reports of the incident.
Ukandu disclosed that the Commissioner also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter.
He assured that the officers would face appropriate disciplinary measures if found culpable after the investigation.
The Command expressed sympathy to the victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment at Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, and wished him a speedy recovery.
The police further assured members of the public that the investigation would be transparent, objective and free from interference.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights, the Command maintained that it has zero tolerance for brutality, misconduct and any abuse of authority by its personnel.
The development comes amid growing calls for improved police accountability and adherence to professional standards in law enforcement operations across the country.
