West African startups now have a shot at $65,000 in prize money as ECOWAS launches the second edition of its Startup Awards, an initiative designed to spotlight and support high-impact businesses driving digital transformation and regional integration across the bloc.
The programme, convened by the ECOWAS Commission’s Directorate of Private Sector and Industry and jointly implemented with the Pan African Alliance of Small and Medium Industries and the Investment Promotion Agencies of West African States, follows on from the inaugural edition held in Niamey back in 2021. This year’s edition, hosted in Abuja, is expected to draw together 60 startups from across ECOWAS member states for a programme that includes masterclasses, startup clinics, pitch competitions, exhibitions, investor deal rooms, policy dialogues, and a post-award acceleration phase.
Prize breakdown
The competition splits its $65,000 total prize pool three ways: the overall winner takes home $30,000, the first runner-up receives $20,000, and the second runner-up gets $15,000. Beyond the cash itself, selected startups gain regional visibility across the ECOWAS bloc, direct introductions to investors, networking access to founders and policymakers, mentorship support, and a six-month acceleration programme, along with digital tools including computers and software.
Eligible sectors
Applications are open across six strategic sectors: EdTech, FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech, CleanTech, and TravelTech, covering everything from education and financial technology to clean energy solutions and tourism innovation.
Who qualifies
To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state, operate a startup that’s registered and based within the region, have been running the business for at least two years, have a working product or service already in the market, and be able to demonstrate genuine market traction or scalability, alongside submitting all required documentation.
Required documents
The application package is fairly extensive: a completed application form spanning Sections A through J, a national passport or ECOWAS-approved ID for the lead founder, a recent passport photograph, business registration certification, two years of financial statements or projections, a business plan capped at 10 pages, a 10-slide pitch deck, and a one-minute pitch video.
Selection process
Selection happens in two stages. At the national level, each ECOWAS member state nominates half of its allocated slots, while the remaining half is filled through open applications from the general public, meaning startups don’t necessarily need a national nomination to compete. Finalists then move to the regional stage, pitching before an independent jury in Abuja drawn from industry, investment, and policy backgrounds, with judges required to follow conflict-of-interest and confidentiality guidelines.
