The Federal Government has clarified recent public commentary surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s participation in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
President Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the General Assembly.
The Vice President is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with world leaders, international organisations and development partners.
It is the third consecutive time Tinubu has delegated his Vice President to represent him at the gathering, a decision that has drawn reactions from opposition leaders, particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who asked the President to explain his absence to Nigerians.
However, in a statement signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday, the Federal Government said Nigeria would be fully and effectively represented throughout the high-level session.
It insisted that Shettima is carrying the full mandate of the President and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
