
A hospital building in Calabar, Cross River State, has collapsed following a landslide reportedly caused by heavy rainfall and severe soil erosion, raising fresh concerns about environmental degradation and infrastructure safety in the state.
The facility, identified as UNICEM Hospital, was said to have collapsed on Thursday after the ground supporting the structure was gradually washed away by erosion.
A video circulating on social media captured the dramatic moment the building, which had been left hanging precariously above a deep gully, eventually gave way and crashed into the eroded area below.
Although the exact extent of the damage remains unclear, the incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and social media users, many of whom questioned whether warning signs had been ignored before the collapse occurred.
As of the time of filing this report, the Cross River State Government had not issued an official statement regarding the incident or confirmed whether there were casualties.
The collapse has, however, reignited discussions about the growing threat of erosion and landslides in parts of Calabar and other communities within the state.
Reacting to the incident on X, several users called for urgent intervention to address recurring environmental challenges in the area.
One user, identified as Dacolls1, described the situation as evidence of a worsening environmental crisis, urging authorities to conduct professional investigations into the recurring landslides and implement sustainable erosion-control measures.
Another user, Okafor_nna54, expressed concern about possible casualties and questioned whether adequate preventive actions had been taken before the building gave way.
Others blamed poor construction practices and weak enforcement of building regulations, with some calling for engineers and relevant regulatory authorities to be held accountable where negligence is established.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that unchecked erosion, poor drainage systems and unregulated development can significantly increase the risk of structural failures, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
The latest incident is expected to renew calls for stronger environmental management policies, regular structural assessments and improved urban planning to protect lives and critical infrastructure from similar disasters.
