Hundreds Of Nigerians Stage Democracy Day Protest Over Insecurity And Economic Hardship

Hundreds of Nigerians took to the streets across major cities on Friday, June 12, 2026, to mark Democracy Day with protests demanding urgent government intervention over worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and repeated cases of mass abductions of schoolchildren and residents

In Ibadan, Oyo State, members of the Take-It-Back Movement and allied civil society organisations marched through major roads carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs calling for immediate government action. The protesters condemned recent kidnappings in Oriire Local Government Area, demanding the swift rescue of abducted victims. Demonstrators also voiced anger at all levels of government, accusing them of failing to protect citizens from rising insecurity and economic distress. Some chants were directed at top political leaders including the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the Inspector-General of Police, reflecting deep frustration over the state of the nation.

The protests coincided with Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, a symbolic date marking the return to civilian rule in 1999. However, many citizens argue that democratic governance has not translated into improved security or economic stability. Inflation, unemployment, and rural insecurity continue to fuel dissatisfaction nationwide. Analysts note that recurring protests on Democracy Day highlight a growing disconnect between government narratives and public lived experiences, especially in regions heavily affected by banditry and kidnappings.

Security agencies monitored the demonstrations across states, with no major incidents of violence recorded. Organisers described the protests as peaceful but warned that civic actions would continue if urgent reforms are not implemented. The development is expected to intensify pressure on the federal government to prioritise security reforms and economic relief measures.
