‘I Lost My Rock’: Patrice Evra Announces Death of Mother

Former Manchester United and France defender Patrice Evra has announced the death of his mother, Juliette, after her battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Evra shared the news in an emotional video on social media, struggling to contain his emotions as he paid tribute to the woman he described as his “rock”. He also sang along to “Avant qu’elle parte” by French hip-hop group Sexion d’Assaut.

“I lost my rock, but I’m trying to stay positive. People ask me every time if I’m always happy,” Evra said.

He used the moment to encourage people who still have their mothers to express their love while they can.

“And now all the people that have still got their mum, even if death doesn’t stop the love, just tell them you love them every single day, before they leave,” he added.

In an accompanying message, Evra described his mother’s love as unconditional and said her memory would remain with him forever.

“Even when the whole world is against you, she will always be your best friend,” he wrote. “A mother’s love is forever, no matter what happens in life. Rest in peace, Maman. You will always be in my heart.”

The 45-year-old had previously spoken about Juliette’s health struggles and the profound role she played throughout his life.

One of the most personal ways Evra has continued to honour her has been by appearing in some of his social media videos wearing only one shoe. The gesture dates back to 2010, when his mother lost her left leg after being rushed to hospital.

Evra was with the France national team when he received news that his mother had been taken to hospital. After receiving permission from the manager, he travelled to see her.

“When I arrived in the corridor, everyone was crying. I saw my brother and sister. I said, ‘Wow, this is weird,’” he recalled.

Evra said he only realised the seriousness of what had happened when he entered his mother’s room and pulled back the blanket.

“My mum was on the bed and I kissed her. Then I sat next to her. It was only when I pulled off the blanket, that’s when I saw the left leg was missing.”

The former defender later explained that leaving his left shoe off in videos became a personal tribute to his mother.

“Every time I do a video, I just dedicate it to my hero, my mum,” he said.

Evra’s latest tribute marks the end of a life-long bond he has repeatedly described as central to who he became, both on and off the football pitch.
