The Lagos State chapter of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) has thrown its weight behind Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, describing him as the most suitable candidate to lead an opposition coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
The party said Makinde possesses the leadership qualities, governance experience and national appeal required to unite opposition forces and offer Nigerians a credible alternative ahead of the next general election.
Speaking in a statement issued in Lagos, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, said the endorsement was based on the governor’s track record in office rather than political sentiment. According to him, Makinde has demonstrated a capacity for effective governance through prudent management of public resources and sustained investment in critical sectors.
Kazeem highlighted achievements recorded under the Oyo State administration, including investments in road infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture and security. He argued that these accomplishments have strengthened Makinde’s reputation as a results-driven leader capable of addressing national challenges.
The party maintained that Nigeria currently requires a leader with practical governance experience and a clear understanding of economic management. It noted that Makinde has consistently promoted policies aimed at expanding economic opportunities while maintaining fiscal discipline.
According to the APM, one of Makinde’s greatest strengths is his ability to build consensus and maintain productive relationships across political divides. The party described him as a bridge-builder whose leadership style could help reduce political tension and foster national unity.
The statement further argued that successful presidential candidates must possess broad national appeal rather than regional popularity. In the party’s view, Makinde’s political relationships and moderate disposition position him as a candidate capable of attracting support from diverse groups across the country.
The Lagos chapter of the party also pledged to play an active role in strengthening opposition structures ahead of the 2027 elections. It said preparations were already underway to mobilise voters and build grassroots networks capable of supporting a coalition campaign.
Kazeem disclosed that the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Prince Laja Adeoye, is coordinating efforts to strengthen polling unit structures, expand volunteer engagement and encourage voter registration and Permanent Voter Card collection across the state.
According to the party, the strategy will focus on young voters, women, professionals, community groups and other stakeholders whose participation will be crucial to the success of any opposition coalition.
The endorsement adds to growing political discussions about potential opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 election, as parties continue to evaluate possible candidates capable of mounting a strong challenge against the ruling APC.
