Lagos Floods: Motorists, Commuters Stranded as Roads Become Submerged

Thousands of motorists and commuters were left stranded across Lagos on Monday after heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding in several parts of the state, submerging major roads and disrupting economic activities.

Areas affected by the flooding included Ikeja, Oshodi, Surulere, Maryland, Agege, Victoria Island and parts of Lagos Island, where rising water levels made movement difficult for both pedestrians and motorists.

Many vehicles were trapped in floodwaters, causing severe traffic congestion on major roads and forcing some commuters to abandon their journeys. Commercial activities were also disrupted as traders struggled to protect their goods from the encroaching floodwaters.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas and remain vigilant during periods of heavy rainfall. The agency urged motorists not to drive through flooded roads, warning that doing so could result in accidents, vehicle damage or loss of life.

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment attributed the flooding to a combination of heavy rainfall, blocked drainage channels and indiscriminate disposal of waste into waterways.

Environmental experts have repeatedly identified poor waste management, rapid urbanisation and inadequate drainage infrastructure as major factors contributing to recurrent flooding in Lagos.

Residents affected by the incident expressed frustration over the recurring nature of floods in the state and called for more proactive measures to improve drainage systems and stormwater management.

The latest flooding has renewed concerns about Lagos State’s preparedness for the peak rainy season and the potential risks posed to lives, property and economic activities.

Authorities have assured residents that drainage clearance operations and other flood-control measures will continue across the state to reduce the impact of future rainfall events.
