The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its environmental enforcement campaign across the Ajah-Lekki corridor, identifying several markets, commercial establishments and institutions for compliance action over alleged violations of waste management regulations.
The agency said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve sanitation standards and promote environmental sustainability in one of Lagos State’s fastest-growing commercial districts.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed that facilities identified during recent monitoring exercises included shopping complexes, hotels, religious centres, healthcare facilities and other business establishments.
According to him, repeated engagements with some operators had failed to secure full compliance with approved waste management practices, making enforcement necessary.
“We have continued to engage and monitor facilities to secure compliance, but where establishments continue to default after being given the opportunity to comply, we will take the necessary enforcement measures,” Gbadegesin said.
He stressed that businesses operating within Lagos State are expected to comply with approved waste disposal regulations to prevent environmental degradation and protect public health.
The latest action follows a joint monitoring exercise conducted by LAWMA’s Project WISE team alongside officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), security personnel and police officers.
During the operation, illegal structures erected along roads and pedestrian walkways in the Eleganza market area were removed to improve accessibility and reduce environmental nuisance.
The enforcement team also sealed the Issa Imamu Market over alleged indiscriminate waste disposal along public roads.
LAWMA said indiscriminate dumping of refuse contributes significantly to flooding, blocked drainage channels and environmental pollution across the state.
The agency urged business owners, market operators and residents to embrace responsible waste management practices and cooperate with environmental authorities.
Gbadegesin noted that LAWMA would continue combining stakeholder engagement with strict enforcement to ensure lasting compliance.
He added that maintaining a clean environment requires collective responsibility and warned that violators would face sanctions where necessary.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s broader environmental sustainability agenda while promoting cleaner and healthier communities across the state.
