As the tournament enters the semi-final stage, both players have scored eight times. However, Mbappé holds the advantage after providing three assists, two more than Messi, who has recorded just one.
FIFA clarified the standings on Sunday, explaining that assists serve as the first tiebreaker when two or more players finish the competition with the same number of goals.
According to the world football governing body, the Golden Boot is awarded primarily on goals scored, but if players remain tied, the number of assists determined by FIFA’s Technical Study Group becomes decisive.
Should players still be level after goals and assists are considered, the award will then be decided by the total number of minutes played during the tournament, with the player who featured for fewer minutes ranked higher.
With both France and Argentina still in contention for the World Cup title, Mbappé and Messi will have additional opportunities to strengthen their claims for the competition’s highest individual scoring honour.
Norway striker Erling Haaland, despite his country’s elimination from the tournament, remains mathematically in contention with seven goals. However, the forward’s hopes now depend on neither Mbappé nor Messi adding to their tally in the remaining matches.
England duo Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are the next closest challengers. The teammates have each scored six goals and provided one assist, although their chances of overtaking the leaders will depend on England’s progress and the performances of the players above them.
The battle for the Golden Boot has become one of the defining storylines of the tournament, with Mbappé and Messi once again emerging as central figures on football’s biggest stage.
