Retired military personnel on Wednesday staged a protest over delays in implementing pension adjustments linked to salary increases approved for serving members of the Armed Forces.
The protest, which was planned to take place at the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, was disrupted as security personnel barricaded the ministry and prevented the pensioners from assembling.
The retirees are demanding that salary adjustments granted to serving military personnel be reflected in their pensions, arguing that they are entitled to corresponding increases under existing pension arrangements.
The development follows a series of complaints by military veterans regarding unpaid benefits, allowances and pension-related issues.
Witnesses reported that tensions briefly rose when security operatives attempted to stop the retirees from gathering at the ministry premises. However, the situation remained under control.
Responding to the protest, the Ministry of Defence assured veterans that the Federal Government remained committed to addressing their welfare concerns.
In a statement issued after a meeting with representatives of the retirees, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), acknowledged the sacrifices made by military veterans and reiterated that their welfare remained a priority.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, the minister said discussions were ongoing with relevant military, pension and financial institutions to ensure a fair and sustainable resolution of the pension adjustment issue.
He explained that any review of veterans’ benefits must undergo proper computation and receive adequate funding to guarantee long-term sustainability and compliance with government regulations.
Musa appealed to the retirees to remain patient and continue engaging with the government through dialogue, assuring them that progress was being made toward resolving the matter.
He further pledged that the ministry would maintain regular communication with veterans’ representatives and provide updates as consultations continue.
