The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 1,230 kilograms of Canadian cannabis valued at approximately ₦12.3 billion at a Lagos seaport and arrested several suspects linked to the shipment.
The agency disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, describing the seizure as a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking.
According to the NDLEA, the illicit consignment was concealed inside a container falsely declared as carrying household items in an attempt to evade detection.
The agency said intelligence-led operations and thorough inspection procedures led to the discovery of the drugs before they could enter the local market.
Several individuals connected to the shipment have been arrested, while investigations continue to uncover the full network behind the operation.
Chairman of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), commended officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism.
Marwa reiterated the agency’s commitment to disrupting drug trafficking networks and preventing Nigeria from being used as a transit point for illicit substances.
He warned drug traffickers and criminal syndicates that the NDLEA would continue to strengthen surveillance and enforcement operations at ports, airports and border crossings nationwide.
The NDLEA chairman also called for greater public cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Security experts have described the seizure as another significant achievement in efforts to curb the activities of international drug cartels operating within and beyond Nigeria.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, with authorities indicating that more arrests could follow.
