Nigeria’s football administration is undergoing a major restructuring following the resignation of senior officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with the federation now moving to clarify reports of a possible international suspension.
The latest controversy centres on a purported letter said to have been issued by FIFA, claiming that Nigeria could be suspended from FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions over alleged government interference in the running of the country’s football.
The NFF, however, has rejected the document, describing it as “totally fake” and insisting that it was not issued by FIFA.
The controversy emerged after former NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, former General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s Executive Committee resigned on August 27.
Gusau, who assumed the NFF presidency in 2022, said his decision was aimed at creating an opportunity for an orderly and comprehensive reform of Nigerian football. He cited the need to address longstanding institutional, governance and developmental challenges within the sport.
The resignations have since triggered changes within the federation. The National Sports Commission endorsed former NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme to take charge of the federation’s secretariat as interim General Secretary, while Ademola Olajire was appointed interim Deputy General Secretary.
The NFF has also suspended preparations for its elective congress. A new electoral process is expected to be organised after the completion of the reform programme being developed in consultation with FIFA and CAF.
It is against this backdrop that the disputed FIFA communication began circulating in sections of the Nigerian media.
The alleged letter reportedly claimed that FIFA was seeking an explanation over the circumstances surrounding Gusau’s resignation, particularly whether government pressure had played a role. It further suggested that the matter could be referred to the FIFA Council if the explanation provided was considered unsatisfactory.
According to the purported document, Nigeria could subsequently face suspension from FIFA and CAF activities, while a Normalisation Committee could be appointed to oversee the country’s football administration.
The NFF has strongly disputed those claims, maintaining that FIFA has already accepted the resignations of the former principal officers and members of the Executive Committee.
The federation said the situation should instead be understood as part of ongoing consultations involving the NFF, National Sports Commission, CAF and FIFA.
It said the stakeholders were working towards a roadmap for comprehensive reforms in accordance with the relevant football statutes and regulations.
The development comes as Nigerian football faces growing scrutiny following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to secure qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
For the NFF, attention is now expected to remain on the reform process rather than the suspension claims contained in the disputed document.
