The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) while paying tribute to the organisation’s outgoing Resident Representative in Nigeria, Dr Christian Ebeke.
Speaking at a farewell dinner in Abuja, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, described Ebeke as a trusted partner whose technical expertise and constructive engagement supported Nigeria’s economic reform efforts during a critical period.
According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Oyedele noted that Ebeke’s tenure coincided with major reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening public finances, improving investor confidence and laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
He said the outgoing IMF representative provided valuable support on fiscal reforms, domestic revenue mobilisation, public debt management, foreign exchange reforms and other key policy areas.
Oyedele also praised Ebeke’s collaborative approach, noting that he engaged stakeholders with openness and respect while demonstrating a strong understanding of Nigeria’s economic realities.
The minister expressed appreciation for Ebeke’s contributions and wished him success in his future assignments.
Also speaking, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr Yemi Cardoso, said Ebeke’s tenure aligned with a defining period in Nigeria’s reform journey, during which authorities implemented measures to restore economic stability and strengthen policy credibility.
Cardoso commended the IMF official for promoting dialogue and technical cooperation while bringing professionalism and objectivity to discussions on economic reforms.
Responding, Ebeke described his three-year assignment in Nigeria as both professionally rewarding and personally enriching.
He expressed admiration for the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians and said he remained confident that sustained reforms and sound economic policies would position the country for inclusive and lasting growth.
Ebeke thanked government officials, development partners, the media and colleagues at the IMF for their support throughout his tenure, expressing optimism that the partnership between Nigeria and the IMF would continue to deepen.
The event was attended by senior government officials, representatives of development partners and members of the diplomatic community.
