A 45-year-old Nigerian man has been sentenced to two years in prison after a court found him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman traveling alone through Euston station in London, in an attack that unfolded across several minutes as she made her way toward the Underground.
Obinwa Obichukwu, of Armstrong Close in Borehamwood, was convicted on two counts of sexual assault following a trial at Inner London Crown Court. According to evidence presented in court, the encounter began on the evening of August 20, 2023, when Obichukwu approached the victim as she walked toward the station and asked what music she was listening to. What started as a passing comment quickly escalated, as he put his arm around her shoulder, invited her back to his house, and then took her hand while repeatedly telling her he loved her as she continued walking down Euston Road.
By the time she reached the station entrance, the situation had turned physical. Obichukwu blocked her path and sexually assaulted her there, but the assault didn’t end at that point. As she continued down the escalator toward the platforms, he followed and assaulted her a second time near the ticket barriers, before she was finally able to push him away and get free.
The case came together through a combination of victim reporting and forensic follow-up. British Transport Police gathered CCTV footage from the station after the assault was reported, evidence that ultimately formed the basis for charges brought by the Crown Prosecution Service. Obichukwu maintained throughout that the encounter had been consensual and chose to take the matter to trial rather than plead guilty, but a jury rejected his account and convicted him in January.
He received his sentence on July 21: two years in prison, alongside a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a decade-long placement on the sex offenders register.
BTP Detective Constable Daniel Burke said the case reflected a clear pattern of a lone woman being deliberately targeted in a busy public setting, adding that the jury had ultimately seen past Obichukwu’s version of events at trial. He reiterated that tackling violence against women and girls remains a core priority for the force, and encouraged anyone who witnesses or experiences similar crimes on the railway network to report it by texting 61016.
