The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Canadian High Commission have identified strategic areas of collaboration aimed at modernising Nigeria’s power sector through technology transfer, renewable energy integration, capacity development and infrastructure investment.
The commitment was made during a visit by Canada’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, David Sproule, to the NISO headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, NISO Managing Director, Abdu Mohammed, said the organisation is driving major digital transformation initiatives designed to improve grid reliability, operational efficiency and electricity market performance.
He disclosed that NISO is implementing critical technologies, including the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System and the Energy Management System (EMS), alongside the development of advanced electricity trading platforms.
Mohammed added that the organisation is deploying telemetry systems and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) to improve electricity market operations, enhance real-time monitoring and increase visibility across the national grid.
According to him, NISO is also evaluating national grid expansion projects, identifying priority investments and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the transmission network.
He noted that the organisation is encouraging private sector participation through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to accelerate infrastructure development and improve electricity delivery nationwide.
Mohammed identified capacity development, technical exchange programmes, renewable energy integration, battery energy storage systems, digital grid technologies, research and innovation as key areas where both countries could establish mutually beneficial partnerships.
In his remarks, Canadian High Commissioner David Sproule reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition and ongoing power sector reforms.
He said Canada is prepared to leverage its expertise in electricity system management, renewable energy integration, energy storage solutions, cybersecurity and electricity market operations to support NISO’s objectives.
Both parties agreed that enhanced collaboration through knowledge exchange, technical cooperation and strategic investments would contribute significantly to building a more reliable, efficient and sustainable electricity system capable of meeting Nigeria’s growing energy demands.
