The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has secured the release on bail of consultant cardiac surgeon, Professor Martin Aghaji, following his arrest and detention by the Department of State Services, DSS, over an alleged economic crime.
Professor Aghaji was arrested at his residence in Enugu and later transferred to the Lagos State Command of the DSS for further investigation.
Chairman of the NMA Lagos State branch, Dr Babajide Saheed, said the association became involved after being informed of the arrest by the Director of the DSS Lagos Command.
According to him, the NMA immediately notified its Enugu branch and national leadership before constituting a delegation to engage with the security agency.
The delegation included National Publicity Secretary of the NMA, Professor Olayinka Atilola, alongside officials from the Lagos and Enugu branches of the association.
The team subsequently visited the DSS Lagos Command where the bail process was completed.
The NMA confirmed that Professor Aghaji was released on bail and handed over to its representatives after all necessary procedures were concluded.
The association stated that details of the allegations remain confidential because investigations are still ongoing.
It added that information relating to the alleged offence has not been made public in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
The NMA said it would continue to monitor developments and engage relevant authorities to ensure due process is followed throughout the investigation.
The association also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of medical professionals while recognising the responsibility of security agencies to conduct lawful investigations.
The DSS is yet to release further details regarding the allegations against the surgeon as investigations continue.
