Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of professional acting in Nigeria. Before becoming a household name in Nollywood, he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England, where he honed the skills that would later distinguish him as one of Africa’s most respected performers.
His acting career began in the United Kingdom, where he featured in stage productions and television programmes. Upon returning to Nigeria, he became one of the leading faces of the country’s emerging film industry, earning admiration for his commanding screen presence, versatility and ability to portray diverse characters.
Over the years, Jacobs appeared in numerous acclaimed productions and mentored generations of actors who looked up to him as a model of professionalism and excellence. His contributions earned him several prestigious honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. He later received the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013 and the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts and national development, the Federal Government conferred on him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.
Beyond his achievements on screen, Jacobs was admired for his enduring marriage to veteran actress Joke Silva, with whom he built one of Nigeria’s most celebrated entertainment families.
