The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested three suspected members of a pipeline vandalism syndicate accused of damaging critical Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) infrastructure in the Dafa area of Kwali Area Council, Abuja.
The arrests followed what the Corps described as an intelligence-driven operation involving extensive surveillance and collaboration with local communities and vigilante groups.
Speaking on the development, FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu said operatives intercepted a commercial truck loaded with 17 severed sections of high-pressure petroleum pipelines allegedly removed from NNPC installations.
According to him, the affected pipelines form part of the network originally constructed to transport crude oil to the Kaduna Refinery and distribute petroleum products to depots across the country. He noted that attacks on such infrastructure pose significant economic and security risks, including disruptions to energy supply and costly repairs.
The suspects were identified as Maitama Inuwa, 30, a truck driver from Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State; Yahuza Danlami, 32, described as a motor boy; and Yasir Abdulrahman, 26, from Niger State, who investigators allege acted on behalf of illegal pipeline dealers.
Odumosu explained that preliminary investigations suggest the syndicate typically operates in remote and forested locations, where pipelines are excavated and cut under the cover of darkness before being transported for sale as scrap or to illicit buyers.
He disclosed that security operatives had been monitoring the area for some time before the arrests were made. According to the commandant, members of the syndicate initially fled after the pipelines were cut but later returned on September 20 to load the materials onto a truck, leading to their arrest.
The operation was carried out with support from local vigilante groups, while four additional suspects reportedly escaped and remain at large.
The commandant said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the wider criminal network behind the alleged vandalism.
He added that the arrested individuals have been profiled and granted administrative bail pending prosecution under the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
Odumosu urged residents living near pipeline corridors and other critical national assets to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
He stressed that community participation remains crucial in protecting vital infrastructure and preventing acts of sabotage capable of undermining national economic interests.
The NSCDC has repeatedly intensified operations against pipeline vandalism and illegal dealings in petroleum infrastructure as part of broader efforts to safeguard strategic national assets and strengthen energy security across the country.
