A National Youth Service Corps member serving in Sokoto State, Miss Amanwi Gahtan Ndomchen, has conducted free Hepatitis screening for 250 residents while also equipping students with vocational skills as part of her community development initiatives.
The healthcare outreach, carried out in partnership with UNICEF, Pathfinder Women and Children Development Initiative (PWCDI) and Pure Path Health Initiative, targeted residents of Kwanawa community and Internally Displaced Persons in Dange/Shuni Local Government Area.
In addition to Hepatitis screening, beneficiaries received blood pressure and blood sugar tests, alongside health education aimed at promoting disease prevention and early medical intervention.
Speaking after the exercise, Ndomchen said the project was inspired by the low level of health awareness among many Nigerians, noting that several people only seek medical care when illnesses have progressed to advanced stages.
The medical biochemist explained that individuals who tested positive for Hepatitis would be referred for counselling and treatment, stressing that early diagnosis remains critical to effective disease management.
The Director of Medical Services at the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, Adamu Abubakar Ibrahim, commended the initiative, describing it as a valuable contribution to public health awareness. He encouraged residents with elevated blood pressure or blood sugar levels to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Similarly, PWCDI Coordinator, Hajiya Aisha Dantshoho, praised the corps member’s commitment and urged other NYSC members to undertake impactful projects within their host communities.
Beyond healthcare, Ndomchen also organised vocational training for students of Rochas Foundation School, Sokoto, teaching them the production of soap, shampoo, peanuts and cosmetic products.
She further supported the two best-performing students with start-up funds to encourage entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
The NYSC Coordinator in Sokoto State, Mr Tyoyer Gabriel Ter, represented by Alhaji Nafiu Garba Nadama, applauded the initiative and encouraged corps members to continue implementing projects that address community needs and leave lasting impacts.
