Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government and security agencies to take decisive steps to halt the wave of killings and violent attacks that continue to claim lives across the country.
Obi made the appeal in a statement posted on his official X account while reacting to reports of deadly attacks in Sokoto and Benue states. He expressed concern over the killing of 32 people in Ungushi community, Sokoto State, and the recent violence in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, where several residents were reportedly killed and many others injured.
Describing the incidents as tragic and unacceptable, Obi said the victims represented more than statistics, noting that they were fathers, mothers, children and breadwinners whose deaths have left families and communities devastated.
He stressed that Nigeria could no longer afford a pattern of recurring violence followed by condolences and promises without concrete action. According to him, addressing insecurity must remain a top priority for governments at all levels.
The former Anambra State governor called for improved intelligence gathering, proactive security operations, faster emergency responses and stronger protection for vulnerable communities. He also advocated the diligent prosecution of perpetrators to deter future attacks.
Obi maintained that every Nigerian deserves to live without fear, insisting that citizens should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes, travel safely on highways and carry out farming activities without the threat of violence.
He extended his condolences to families affected by the attacks and prayed for comfort for the bereaved, while expressing hope for lasting peace across the country.
His comments came amid fresh reports of violence in Plateau and Adamawa states. In Plateau State, at least 26 persons were reportedly killed after gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Government Area. Residents said the assault occurred between Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday, leaving many others injured.
Similarly, in Adamawa State, a police inspector and seven civilians were confirmed dead following a suspected Boko Haram attack on Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area.
The latest incidents have renewed concerns over the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria and intensified calls for stronger measures to protect lives and property.
