Ogun Police Make Headway in Broadcaster’s Murder After Tracking Down Missing Vehicle

The Lexus RX300 that went missing from Kitan Oyesiku’s residence after she was killed has been recovered. The questions surrounding her death have not.

Ogun State Police confirmed this week that the vehicle was retrieved during a night operation and secured as an exhibit in the ongoing investigation into the killing of the retired broadcaster and her security guard, both found dead at her residence on Sunday. The police public relations officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, did not provide details of where or how the vehicle was found, or whether anyone was arrested in connection with its recovery.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, visited the scene on Tuesday, inspecting the premises and receiving briefings from detectives. His office described the visit as part of efforts to unravel what it called the mystery surrounding the deaths. That the police are still using the word mystery more than 48 hours after the bodies were discovered is itself a detail worth noting.

What is known remains sparse. Oyesiku’s body was found inside her apartment and her security guard’s body was recovered separately, within the security post on the same premises. The circumstances under which both were killed have not been formally disclosed. Gunmen have been mentioned in connection with the incident, but no suspects have been publicly named and no arrests have been confirmed beyond what the vehicle recovery may have produced.

Ojajuni extended condolences to the family and assured residents that all available resources are being deployed to track down those responsible. He said significant progress is being made and pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation develops. What residents of Ogun State will be watching for is whether they are followed by arrests.

Oyesiku’s death has drawn wide concern, partly because of who she was. A retired broadcaster with a public profile carries a different weight in the public imagination than an anonymous victim, and the circumstances of her killing, at home, alongside a guard whose presence was presumably meant to protect her, raise uncomfortable questions about security in residential areas that money and precaution alone cannot fully answer.
