Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a landslide victory in his polling unit during the ongoing governorship election, polling 326 votes out of 333 accredited voters.
The result was announced from Polling Unit 003, Oyebanji’s Compound, RA 04 in Ekiti West Local Government Area. The unit had 668 registered voters, with a turnout of approximately 49.9 per cent. Other parties performed poorly at the unit: the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 2 votes, Action Democratic Party (ADP) 1 vote, and African Action Congress (AAC) 1 vote. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded zero votes, while three votes were declared void.
Speaking after casting his vote on Saturday, Oyebanji described the turnout as impressive and the electoral process as peaceful. He expressed confidence in the overall conduct of the election across the state. The strong performance in his home polling unit is seen as a positive indicator for the APC candidate in the governorship race. Full results from other parts of the state are still being collated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Political observers are monitoring the election closely, as it tests the popularity of the ruling party in Ekiti State. Oyebanji’s overwhelming lead in his own polling unit reflects strong grassroots support and satisfaction with his administration’s performance in infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital development. The high turnout in a relatively peaceful atmosphere has been welcomed by stakeholders, who hope it signals a credible process across the state.
The governorship election in Ekiti is significant for the South-West political landscape, with implications for party dominance and future alliances ahead of 2027. Analysts believe Oyebanji’s strong showing at the unit level could translate into broader victories if replicated in other areas. The PDP and other opposition parties are expected to challenge results where they feel aggrieved, but the peaceful conduct so far has raised hopes for a transparent outcome. As collation continues, all eyes remain on INEC to deliver a credible process that reflects the will of Ekiti voters.
This result further strengthens Oyebanji’s position as he seeks re-election, demonstrating the APC’s continued hold in the state. The election is also being watched for its impact on voter confidence and democratic consolidation in Nigeria’s federal system.
